Inspiring the next Generation!
The 9th annual Mid Sussex Science Week concluded successfully at Haywards Heath College on July 12th. Organized by BSE|3D Limited and the Burgess Hill Business Parks Association, and sponsored by local businesses, the event gathered hundreds of young minds to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects.
Eight local primary schools participated, each paired with industry leaders for hands-on learning and project development. Collaborations included Southway School with HPC, Bolney School with Furnace Design, Warden Park with Adelphi UK, Harlands School with Caffyns, Windmills School with Flakt Group, Ditchling School with Leap Environmental, St Wilfrid’s School with Mitsubishi Electric, and London Meed School with Edwards Vacuum. These partnerships provided students with practical insights into STEM fields.
The event featured exhibitors such as Artemis Marketing, British Arachnological Society, Broadcast Bionics, BSE|3D, Caffyns, East Sussex Reptile and Amphibian Society, Edwards Vacuum, Gatwick Airport, Leap Environmental, and Wakehurst. Students interacted with industry professionals and observed real-world applications of their studies.
The event also saw participation from esteemed judges who evaluated the students’ projects and presentations. Their expertise and feedback were invaluable in encouraging the students and highlighting the significance of their efforts.
Special guest Mims Davies MP, a strong supporter of the event, praised the participants. Esteemed judges evaluated the students’ projects, awarding Southway School and HPC 1st place, Ditchling School and Leap Environmental 2nd place, and St Wilfrid’s School and Mitsubishi Electric 3rd place.

๐ฌ๐ Exciting News! Science Week 2024 is Officially Set for July! ๐๐ฌ
๐๏ธ Save the Dates: July 8th – 12th ๐๏ธ
We are thrilled to announce that this year’s Science Week has been officially scheduled for the month of July! Get ready for a week filled with fascinating projects to create and engaging activities.
๐ Mark Your Calendars ๐ Make sure to pencil in July 8-12th for an unforgettable celebration of all things science! Whether you’re a seasoned scientist, an aspiring researcher, or simply curious about the wonders of the universe, Science Week has something for everyone.
Stay tuned for updates on the full schedule of events and more.
So where do you fit in? Your involvement can be as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. There are several ways in which you could get involved:
1 โ Be a STEM Ambassador. You would be partnered with a local school to work on a project which will then be presented at the Friday event. You would need to visit the school a couple of times during the week to help them with their ideas but the teacher mainly leads the project with them. Ideally you would be available to attend a couple of times in the week for an hour or so and at the event on Friday where the children will show their projects to the judges.
2 โ Provide an exhibit for the children to look at during the Friday event. While the projects are being judged, we have companies around the hall engaging children in small activities. 12 -18 children for about 20 mins at a time. In recent years, for example, we had Broadcast Bionics showing a fault-finding radio setup, Edwards showing what happens to marshmallows when you create a vacuum, BSE3D made some simple torches, Sally Turner came to show her sports equipment for her GB Cycling, ISG did a building exercise and Bio Productions displayed some of their cleaning products.
3 โ Provide sponsorship to help fund the event. At the end of the event all students are presented with a goody bag of STEM related products. This can either be something you provide directly with or without branding or a donation towards the goody bag, running of the event or the science show costs.
4 โ Be a judge. In pairs, the judges talk to the children about their projects and award marks based on their understanding of their chosen topic. This is then discussed as a group and the winners (and runner-up) decided. Prize giving is after lunch.
5 โ Share with us any details of other companies and their contacts that may be interested in getting involved.
Let’s ignite curiosity, inspire innovation, and celebrate the incredible world of science together! ๐๐ฌ
As you can imagine this is quite an event to put on and it can only be done with the generous help of businesses and individuals. If you are able to help in any way, please make contact with us and let us know how you would be able to get involved.
