We need more engineers. For that we need more young people to understand how what they learn at school is used in the real world. Giving young people the chance to talk directly to engineers and scientists and to engage in hands-on activities that showcase and contextualise engineering and science is at the heart of our approach. Mid Sussex Science weeks committee’s further ambitions are to allow the local science and engineering community to build links with industry and with schools. This already has a track record and results in greater opportunities for our young people and makes for an even more rewarding career for our teachers.
This initiative also provides a platform for local employers to grow the talent pipeline as part of a collective drive. Delivering national impact through local coordination, MSSW has directly reached over 1,200 young people in the past four years through voluntary help and donations.
MSSW sees industry professionals bring alive classrooms with science and maths and showcase engineering careers. It comprises targeted outreach by engineering employers, engagements at regional events and an industry-funded programme of interventions.
